In "Shoe" we see Newton moving away from full-length portraits and towards more abstract explorations of line and form. Using sparing visual details, Newton's mastery of both suggestion and narrative is unparalleled here. Time and again, Newton returned to the motif of the high heel as a symbol of both power and danger. While Shoe presents the first time he played with the motif, he would go on to take his iconic x-ray works of high heels and even don a pair in a now-famous self-portrait.
