"Upstairs at Maxim's" 16x20 Vintage Silver Gelatin Print by Helmut Newton.

Helmut Newton's Private Property Collection "Upstairs At Maxim's" original print captured in Paris, 1978, at the famous Maxim's restaurant and club. At first glance it appears that a woman has her hand extended to be kissed but at further inspection it is a mannequin with the hand severed.

This is a rare pre-1985 original vintage print produced in small numbers from a series of transparencies that Newton considered his most provocative and important work through 1985. Always unsigned, they were sent out to major publications to stimulate interest in a photographer’s work. Most were destroyed or written over, it is very rare to find them in immaculate condition.

This collection of vintage prints were gifted to Newton’s agent Norman Solomon, in recognition of the work he had performed producing the "Private Property" collection and promoting a series of exhibitions in London, Paris, New York, and Los Angeles in 1985. The collection was legally transferred to Solomon in 1986 via written agreement and further ratified in legal settlement in 2012 with the Helmut Newton Estate and Foundation in the Superior Court of Los Angeles, California, and recorded in the United States Copyright Office.
