"Elsa Peretti II, New York 1975" 20x24 Vintage Silver Gelatin Print by Helmut Newton
A timeless and culturally significant image, "Elsa Peretti in Bunny Costume" is one of the most enduring symbols of 1970s glamour and luxury. Captured in New York in 1975, Helmut Newton transforms a seemingly playful moment into a layered narrative about celebrity, voyeurism, and power dynamics.
Set against the backdrop of towering Manhattan skyscrapers, Peretti stands as a lone figure embodying both intimacy and spectacle. The stark contrast between private and public space is a defining characteristic of Newton’s work, as he casts the intimacy of the night into the light of day. The unseen but implied watchful gazes from the surrounding buildings add an element of tension and allure, reinforcing Newton’s signature themes of seduction and observation.
Beyond her role as a model and muse, Elsa Peretti went on to become Tiffany & Co.’s primary jewelry designer, with her innovative creations accounting for over 10% of the company’s total sales at times. This print serves as both an homage to Peretti’s impact on fashion and a testament to Newton’s ability to capture cultural icons in unforgettable compositions.
