One of Helmut Newton’s most personal and widely recognized images, "Self Portrait with Nude Model and Wife, Paris 1981" encapsulates Newton’s signature blend of high fashion, voyeurism, and autobiographical storytelling. Originally shot for Vogue Hommes, this photograph showcases Newton himself modeling the trench coat—a role he took on after deciding he had no interest in photographing a male model for the assignment.
His wife, June Newton, also known as photographer Alice Springs, happened to arrive at the studio for lunch, where Newton spontaneously incorporated her into the composition, directing her to sit by the seamless backdrop. The scene was further shaped by Newton’s careful use of lighting, framing, and the presence of his muse, model Sylvia Gobbel, a frequent subject of his work.
Gobbel, who was interviewed in 2018, recalled that this was her favorite image of herself taken by Newton, reflecting the chemistry and storytelling Newton injected into every frame.

This is a rare original vintage print produced in the 1980s in Paris
at the Colour Lab facility where Newton produced his prints for the majority of his career.

Provenance:
This collection of vintage prints was gifted to Newton’s agent, Norman
Solomon, in recognition of the work he had performed producing the Private
Property Collection and promoting a series of exhibitions in London,
Paris, New York, and Los Angeles in 1985. Read more.
The collection was legally transferred to Solomon in 1986 via written
agreement and further ratified in a legal settlement in 2012 with the Helmut
Newton Estate and Foundation in the Superior Court of Los Angeles,
California. It is recorded in the United States Copyright Office.
The signed agreement was certified & notarized recognizing Norman
Solomon as the legal owner, making these prints authentically supported by
legal agreement.
