Winnie On Deck Cannes, 1975 by Helmut Newton Vintage Silver Gelatin Print

The Print

Newton loved the romanticism of the water and spent much of his career in Monte Carlo. ‘Winnie on Deck', also known as 'Cruising from behind', shows Newton at his overtly sexual best. Playing on the hierarchies between Captain and sailor, Newton creates sexually unabashed imagery heightened by the fantasy of the sea and large false breasts has created an overtly exaggerated image.

Winnie Holman (the Danish super-model who later to become Jack Nicholson's lover with whom she had a daughter) was a regular favorite of Newton's models.

Collection History

This is a rare pre-1985 original vintage print produced in small numbers from a series of transparencies that Newton considered his most provocative and important work through 1985. Always unsigned, they were sent out to major publications to stimulate interest in a photographer’s work. Most were destroyed or written over, it is very rare to find them in immaculate condition.

Provenance

This collection of vintage prints were gifted to Newton’s agent Norman Solomon, in recognition of the work he had performed producing the "Private Property" collection and promoting a series of exhibitions in London, Paris, New York, and Los Angeles in 1985. The collection was legally transferred to Solomon in 1986 via written agreement and further ratified in legal settlement in 2012 with the Helmut Newton Estate and Foundation in the Superior Court of Los Angeles, California, and recorded in the United States Copyright Office. This vintage print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Norman Solomon that details his ownership rights and authenticity supported by legal agreement.
