Helmut Newton 100 Exhibition at Kraftwerk Berlin 2020
Helmut Newton Turns 100
Helmut Newton, born Helmut Neustädter in Germany on October 31, 1920, would have turned 100 years old in 2020. Newton spent years at the top of the fashion photography world with an energetically charged, provocative style that has been widely imitated and whose racy black and white photos were a mainstay of Vogue and other fashion publications for decades. At the age of 83, Newton passed away January 23, 2004 in Los Angeles, California.
To celebrate what would have been his 100 birthday, The Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, which was founded in 2003, honored the special anniversary with a large public exhibition featuring his most popular images.
The Exhibition
The exhibition stretched 85 meters, nearly 300 feet, installed on a public outdoor wall at the Kraftwerk Berlin exhibition venue. The event space is large and vibrant and a must visit in Berlin. Built in the 1960's approximately the same time as the Berlin wall, it functioned as the most centrally located power station in the city named Mitte. After the fall of the Berlin wall the property stayed vacant for years until 2006 when it was partially renovated as a famous techno dance club. Today it hosts art and music exhibitions and exudes a great energy. Located at Köpenicker Str. 70, 10179 Berlin, Germany, the venue hosts a ranging variety of artistic and musical events.
